Amun, once a local Theban deity, rose to become the 'King of the Gods' in ancient Egypthis name meaning 'The Hidden One.' When the Theban princes drove out the Hyksos and founded the Eighteenth Dynasty, Amun became pre eminent; united with the sun god to give him universal appeal, and Amen Re became king of the gods.
